Director Data Management – Remote

As a key member of the Data Solutions organization, the Director Data Management will be responsible for day-to-day technical support/maintenance of our current database systems, as well as working on projects related to additional data systems, or data products. The role is also responsible for managing a remote team of data operation professionals as well as having responsibility for defining our database moving forward including creating and championing policies and standards.

This role will work closely with internal customers, other Data Solutions members, and report to the VP of Data Solutions.

This is a fully remote position

Expedition Expectations

• Database administration
  1. Including encryption, security, and high availability
  2. Disaster recovery plans
  3. Setup new prod and non-prod databases as required
  4. Data/database security reviews
  5. Approve the deployment of new indexes
• Database architecture
  1. Including encryption, security, and high availability
  2. Documentation of environment
• Asset manager for DQS, MDS, Data Cloud Factory, and Azure data options
  1. Research industry best practices
  2. Define and document standards, and policies, including for: usage, installation, configuration, preventative maintenance, monitoring, disaster recovery, and high availability.
• Informal research into data\database tools, frameworks, and architectures

• Cloud Services and Architecture
  1. Experience designing and implementing cloud-based data architectures using services such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, beyond just Azure SQL.
  2. Familiarity with cloud-native services like AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, or Azure Data Lake.
• AI and Machine Learning Integration
  1. Experience integrating data architectures with machine learning models and AI analytics.
  2. Understanding of data requirements for AI workflows and the ability to design data solutions that support advanced data science initiatives.
• Modern Data Stack Technologies
  1. Proficiency with tools like dbt (data build tool), Airflow for data orchestration, and modern ETL/ELT platforms.
  2. Experience with real-time data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Kafka, Apache Spark).
• Data Security and Compliance in the Cloud
  1. Advanced knowledge of data security, privacy, and compliance within cloud environments, including understanding of GDPR, CCPA, and other data protection regulations.
• Hands-On Experience with Containerization and Orchestration Technologies
  1. Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerization technologies that facilitate scalability and efficiency in cloud environments.

• Formal extensive research\evaluation of data\database tools, frameworks, and architectures
• Enforce data\database standards and policies with other teams via manager\lead
• Meet with external parties to determine technical architecture requirements for project initiatives involving data/database area.

Passport to Success

• Minimum 10 years of experience in database and data warehouse development
• Technical Skills
  1. Advanced proficiency in relational and non-relational databases, with a strong understanding of when to use SQL or NoSQL.
  2. Expertise in data pipeline and workflow management tools such as Apache Airflow, Kafka, and modern ETL platforms.
  3. Solid understanding of containerization and orchestration technologies to support scalable data solutions.
  4. Ability to mentor teams and lead projects involving complex data architectures that integrate with business intelligence and AI applications.

• Cloud Architecture and AI Integration
  1. Design and implement scalable and secure cloud-based data architectures, ensuring alignment with AI and machine learning capabilities.
  2. Extensive experience with cloud services such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, including specific tools for data management and analytics.
  3. Develop and maintain architectures that support real-time data processing and integration with AI models.

• Ensure all data solutions adhere to the latest security and compliance regulations within cloud environments.

Going the Extra Mile

• Degree in business, computer science, or engineering or a related discipline
• Minimum of five years of database architecture experience
