Your Expedition (Position Overview)
As a key member within the IT Enterprise Architecture (ITEA) organization, the SQL Server DBA will be responsible for both logical and physical DBA tasks supporting our on-premise applications including our ERP: Unit4/CentralCommand, as well as databases hosted in Azure SQL Database. Part of this job is migrating our on-premise version of SQL Server to an updated version hosted on an Azure VM. This will involve architecting for high-availability setup. This role will also support development initiatives for Direct Travel’s core stack.
This role requires a blend of technical DBA skills and application-level understanding, with a focus on long-term support and knowledge transfer for Unit4/CentralCommand. This role reports to the VP, Enterprise Architecture.
Going the Extra Mile (Responsibilities)
- Manage and maintain SQL Server environments, including setup, migration, upgrades, backups, patching, and security.
- Perform logical DBA duties: understand application architecture, work closely with the application team, support development projects, and ensure database design aligns with business needs.
- Handle physical DBA tasks: server builds, performance tuning, index management, permissions, and regular maintenance.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure seamless support and knowledge transfer for future projects.
- Document processes and train others to ensure continuity and minimize reliance on a single individual.
- Develop and maintain formal Unit4/CentralCommand disaster recovery plan with CentralCommand Admin team.
- Perform bi-annual security reviews for all SQL Server databases and any databases hosted in Azure SQL Database.
Your Passport to Success (Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
- Deep expertise in both physical and logical SQL Server administration. Minimum of 10 years of experience.
- Experience with on-premises SQL Server environments (min 10 years), high availability clusters (min 2–3 years), and Azure SQL Database (min 2–3 years).
- Ability to work with application teams to support backend requirements and enhancements.
- Strong SQL development, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and security management skills (min 10 years).
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior work supporting Unit4/CentralCommand or similar ERP/mission-critical systems.
- Experience with SSIS package support and catalog management.
- Familiarity with functional DBA work and cross-team collaboration.
- Experience with Jira Epic and Stories to document projects.
