At Nautilus, we have a big and important mission: improve the health of millions by unleashing the potential of the proteome to accelerate drug development and enable a new world of precision and personalized medicine. We are developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform of unprecedented sensitivity, scale, and ease of use that we believe will democratize access to the proteome – one of the most dynamic and valuable sources of biological insight. To accomplish this, we are pursuing hard scientific problems with an entrepreneurial mindset and creating a world-class team of builders, innovators, and dreamers across a wide range of disciplines.

We are hiring for a Staff Data Scientist to lead our Data Science efforts. This role involves tackling complex data challenges, developing predictive models, and extracting valuable insights to inform strategic decisions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, with proven experience in machine learning, statistical analysis, and big data technologies. You will lead projects from conception to deployment, mentor junior data scientists, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and improve our data-driven decision-making processes. If you are passionate about leveraging data to solve problems and have a track record of delivering impactful data science solutions, we would love to hear from you.

This position will report to the Vice President of Probe Development and Bioinformatics and is located in San Carlos, CA, San Diego, CA, or Seattle, WA.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the new Data Science team and mentor junior data scientists, providing guidance and support in their professional development.

  • Lead the data-driven decision-making process, from data collection and analysis to implementation and monitoring of solutions.

  • Manage data science projects, ensuring they meet business requirements and are delivered on time.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand biochemical challenges and objectives, translating complex data into actionable insights.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in data science and machine learning, continuously improving our methodologies and technologies.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in Statistics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, or similar field.

  • 10+ years of experience in turning complex data into actionable insights in the fields of proteomics, genomics, or transcriptomics.

  • 3+ years of experience in a bioinformatics, data science, or machine learning leadership role.

  • Solid and demonstrable knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms.

  • Excellent programming skills in Python.

  • Able to apply statistical analysis and visualization approaches to surface insights within various types of data.

  • Ability to work with structured and unstructured data from a diversity of sources (local and remote databases, files on disk, public data sources).

  • Familiarity with best practices for data extraction, transformation, and loading pipeline development, ideally in an AWS environment.

  • Familiar with distributed SQL querying.

  • Proficient in deploying data pipelines on AWS.

  • Familiarity with Bayesian statistics, regressions, sampling methods, probability distributions, correlations, parametric/non-parametric tests.

  • Familiarity with Apache, Spark, or similar frameworks for processing large datasets.

  • A track record of staying up-to-date on modern software tooling and analytical approaches in the field of data science.

  • Excellent track record of leading complex projects throughout all stages, from inception to deployment.

  • Strong organization and communication skills, with the ability to lead others both directly and through collaboration.

  • Ability to have fun when building complex systems while working side-by-side with experts from a variety of disciplines.

  • Self-motivated, driving projects forward to meet deadlines.
