POSITION: Scientist I / Associate Scientist

REPORTS TO: Director, Scientific Research

DEPARTMENT: Research & Development

STATUS: Exempt

TWINSTRAND BIOSCIENCES OVERVIEW

TwinStrand Biosciences is a Seattle-based genomics company focused on developing cutting-edge approaches for early detection of cancer, treatment optimization, and risk prediction using our ultra-accurate TwinStrand Duplex Sequencing™ technology. Our technology enables researchers to detect genetic “needles in a haystack”. By identifying ultra-low frequency DNA mutations with a resolution 10,000-fold greater than conventional tools on the market, TwinStrand enables detection, quantification, and characterization of variants that were previously undetectable.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Scientist I or Associate Scientist position works to advance the scope of basic and translational applications for our exceptionally high fidelity error-corrected NGS technology. As a member of the Laboratory Research team this individual contributes at a high level to research efforts that improve core Duplex Sequencing assay performance, as well as expanding applications in internal projects or with clients and collaborators. You will interface with teams throughout the company including Product Development, Data Sciences, and Marketing, with the goal of piloting and developing new products for TwinStrand Duplex Sequencing assays.

At TwinStrand, our core philosophy is that science comes first. As a member of our Research & Development department, you are responsible for supporting an organized and rigorous scientific working environment in the laboratory and with computational data analysis. Success in this role requires high standards of scientific rigor including meticulous execution of well-designed experiments, detailed record keeping, and precision in reporting experimental results. Deep rooted creativity, curiosity, and a passion for continuous improvement are highly valued.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and perform Duplex Sequencing laboratory experiments to improve the core technology and pilot new assays/applications for low-frequency variant detection.
  • Improve or expand current applications, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and mutagenesis assays.
  • Prepare Duplex Sequencing libraries from internal samples or client/collaborator cohorts.
  • Load and operate Illumina sequencers.
  • Devote at least 50% of time to laboratory work.
  • Analyze sequencing data and/or organize data for handoff to the Data Sciences team, as appropriate for each project.
  • Contextually synthesize experimental results from technical and biological perspectives and plan/propose follow-up investigations.
  • Efficiently and approachably present data at team meetings and to external collaborators.
  • Maintain rigorous electronic records detailing all work, and ensure all data and materials are appropriately archived.
  • Work with research technicians as necessary to get additional support for experiments.
  • Keep up on scientific literature relevant to applications being developed in the lab.
  • Assist commercial teams with preparation of application notes and other outward facing scientifically driven promotional material and kit support documentation.
  • Participate in preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and conference presentations.

EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES

  • Scientist 1: PhD or equivalent in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field, or MS with significant independent investigative experience. Associate Scientist: MS or equivalent in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field, or BS with significant laboratory experience.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience.
  • Experience with NGS library preparation and analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Flexible team player who is comfortable in a fast-paced startup company with ambitious goals and timelines.

PHYSICAL AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a lab bench carrying out fine molecular biology techniques and repetitive tasks.
  • Some work from home is permitted, depending on laboratory schedule.
  • Periodic opportunities to travel to national and international conferences and other events.
  • Must be able to lift twenty pounds at times.

OUTSTANDING SCIENTISTS WILL POSSESS

  • Evidence of significant independent investigative science illustrated by publication history, achievement of independent research funding, public presentations, or patents.
  • Experience with error-corrected NGS and low-frequency variant detection.
  • Strong domain expertise in one or more of the following fields: cancer genomics, oncology diagnostics, cellular therapies, mutagenesis/genetic toxicology, DNA repair, or clonal evolution.
  • Interest in teaching and mentoring junior team members.
  • Strong motivation for success in NGS biotech industry and desire to advance skills.
  • At least two years in a postdoctoral academic or industry environment.
